Fortnite is back on iPhone and iPad almost everywhere in the world. Epic Games pushed the game live on the Apple App Store globally on May 19, 2026, ending a nearly six-year absence that started when Apple pulled it for violating payment rules. If you’re on an iPhone 11 or newer, or an iPad Pro 10.5-inch or later, you can download it right now, for free.
The one exception is Australia. More on that in a second.
This Is Not a Peace Deal
Epic CEO Tim Sweeney made that clear. On X, he called the return “the beginning of the end of the Apple Tax worldwide” and framed it as the opening move of the “final battle” with Apple, not a white flag. Epic is betting that a US court will soon force Apple to publicly disclose how it actually calculates its App Store fees. Once those numbers are out in the open, Epic believes regulators in Japan, the EU, the UK, and elsewhere will have a hard time allowing Apple’s 30% commission to stand.
Apple telling the US Supreme Court that “regulators around the world are watching this case” is what prompted the timing. Epic saw that and moved.

What You Actually Get
Both Battle Royale and Zero Build modes are available. You can also buy V-Bucks directly through Epic’s own payment system, which means you skip the markup Apple’s standard commission would add. That payment option is the exact thing that got Fortnite kicked off iOS in 2020 in the first place. It’s back.
There’s also a free reward to celebrate. Download the game now and you can unlock the exclusive Yeddy Outfit tied to the global relaunch.
The Australia Situation Is Weird
Here’s the irony: Australia is the one country where Epic actually won in court. An Australian court found that many of Apple’s developer terms are unlawful, and yet Apple is still enforcing them. Epic says it won’t return there under an arrangement a court has already called illegal. They’re waiting for a court order to force Apple’s hand.
So Fortnite is available everywhere except the one market where Epic has a definitive legal win.

How We Got Here
Quick timeline for context:
- August 2020 — Epic added direct payments to Fortnite, Apple removed it from the App Store within hours
- May 2025 — Fortnite returned to the US App Store after a federal judge threatened to drag an Apple executive into court
- December 2025 — Fortnite came back on Android in the US
- March 2026 — Epic and Google settled globally, Fortnite restored on Google Play worldwide
- May 19, 2026 — Global App Store rollout, Australia excluded
What This Means for Players
If you’ve been playing Fortnite on PC, console, or Android because you lost iOS access in 2020, you can now just open the App Store and download it again. No workarounds, no side-loading, no browser version. Just the game.
The legal fight between Epic and Apple is still ongoing, but for most players, that’s background noise. Fortnite is back on your phone.
Download Fortnite free on the App Store now and grab the limited Yeddy Outfit before it’s gone. Check back on GamerUrge for the latest Fortnite news and updates.
