Borderlands Mobile Quietly Launches on iPhone in US

Borderlands Mobile unexpectedly launched on iOS in the US on April 9, 2026, as a limited-time test from Zynga’s NaturalMotion studio. The free-to-play looter shooter includes Campaign Missions, Tower of Terror, and Circle of Slaughter, with Gearbox helping guide the game’s lore and design. Only The Summoner class is playable right now, while more classes and deeper customization are marked as coming soon.

If you woke up on April 9, 2026, with zero expectations of a new Borderlands game, you were not alone. Because that is exactly how 2K and Zynga wanted it. No trailers. No hype. No social media posts. Just a new game, quietly sitting in the App Store, waiting to be found.

Welcome to Borderlands Mobile.

What Even Is This?

Borderlands Mobile is a brand-new, free-to-play looter shooter developed by Zynga’s NaturalMotion studio. It is not a port of any existing Borderlands title. Think of it as a completely new entry in the franchise, built specifically for phones, set in the same era as Borderlands 3.

The game carries all the charm that fans love, from the cel-shaded comic book art style to the chaotic gun-slinging gameplay. Just condensed into bite-sized mobile missions.

Gearbox, the original creators of Borderlands, is involved in the project, providing creative guidance on the game’s design, history, and lore. So at least the people who know Borderlands best are keeping an eye on how it turns out.

How Did Nobody Know About This?

That is the big question. As of April 9, neither the official Borderlands Twitter account, 2K, nor Gearbox had posted a single thing about the game. No reveal trailer on YouTube. No press release. Nothing.

It was spotted by deals tracker Wario64, of all people, and quickly spread across gaming communities.

2K later sent a statement confirming the game exists, clarifying that “Borderlands Mobile” is only a placeholder name and that this is a “limited-time test.” The full quote from the company: “We are always exploring ways to introduce Borderlands to new audiences. Zynga’s NaturalMotion studio is currently conducting a limited-time test for an untitled Borderlands mobile project.”

Some fans online are speculating it may have gone public earlier than intended. Looking at the current state of the game, that theory makes a lot of sense.

What Can You Actually Do in It?

Right now, the game offers three core modes: Campaign Missions, Tower of Terror, and Circle of Slaughter. There is also a companion system where you can send recruits out on missions to earn money, XP, and gear while you are away, tied to real-world timers to keep you coming back.

The first event, Circle of Slaughter, is already live and rewards players with legendary chest keys to use in the in-game store.

Familiar enemies like Skags, bandits, and bosses are all present. And yes, Claptrap makes an appearance because of course he does.

Only One Character Available Right Now

At launch, only one of the four planned classes is playable: The Summoner. The other three, The Exo-Tank, The Outrider, and The Assassin, are listed as “coming soon.”

Character customization is also not functional yet. Some reviewers noted they could not change anything about their character at all. For a franchise that has always prided itself on deep customization, that feels like a significant gap, but this is clearly a test build and not a finished product.

Free to Play, but What About Microtransactions?

There is an in-game store and a battle pass already in the game. However, there is no visible monetization active yet. Given that this is a soft launch and a free-to-play title, you can safely expect that to change before any full global rollout.

Where Can You Get It?

Right now, Borderlands Mobile is only available on iOS, and it appears to be limited to the US market. There is no Android version yet, though the game’s support website apparently hints that one is in the works.

iPad users can download it, but it is clearly built for iPhone since it does not fill the larger screen properly without manually toggling a full-screen option.

Why Now?

The timing is interesting. Borderlands 4 launched in 2025 and reportedly did not meet sales expectations. Gearbox has since paused development on its planned Switch 2 version. Expanding the franchise to mobile could be a way to reach new audiences and keep the brand alive between bigger releases.

Whether this soft launch becomes something bigger depends entirely on how players respond.

Should You Try It?

If you are an iPhone user in the US who loves the Borderlands universe, there is no reason not to give it a shot. It is free, it runs on the same gameplay loop the series is known for, and it has Claptrap in it.

Just go in knowing it is unfinished. This is a test, and the developers are watching how people play.

Download Borderlands Mobile for free on the iOS App Store right now and let 2K and Zynga know what you think. Your feedback could directly shape what this game becomes.
