No region is getting off easy. This is a truly global price increase.

Why Is Sony Raising Prices?
Sony has pointed to ongoing pressures in the global economic environment as the reason behind the hike. But industry analysts have zeroed in on something more specific: a sharp and sustained rise in memory chip costs.
DRAM, a key component inside every PS5, has seen contract prices surge more than 170% year-over-year. The main driver is AI. Data centres powering artificial intelligence tools are consuming memory chips at a scale the industry has never seen before, pulling supply away from consumer electronics and driving costs up.
Sony is passing a portion of that cost directly to buyers.
This Is Not the First Time
This is actually the second PS5 price increase in under a year. Sony raised prices once before in August 2025, though that round was a comparatively small $50 per model.
This time, the jumps are steeper across the board. The PS5 Digital Edition, which launched at $399.99 back in 2020, will now retail at $599.99. That is a $200 increase, or 50%, since launch. For the PS5 Pro, the US price has climbed $150 to nearly $900, making it one of the priciest mainstream consoles ever sold.
It is a far cry from where the generation started.
Could Xbox and Nintendo Follow?
Sony may not be the only one making this move. Analysts have flagged that Microsoft and Nintendo could announce similar price adjustments in the coming months, especially if memory costs remain elevated.
Nintendo, however, is in an awkward position. The Switch 2 is still early in its lifecycle and raising prices now could dampen the momentum it has been building. Microsoft has stayed quiet so far, though the industry will be watching closely to see if it follows Sony’s lead.
What Should You Do Right Now?
The current prices are still valid until April 1, 2026. From April 2 onward, every model across every region costs more, and there is no indication Sony plans to reverse the decision anytime soon.
If you are in the US, buying the standard PS5 before the deadline saves you $100. Go for the PS5 Pro and you save $150. Even the PlayStation Portal is going up by $50.
It is not the flashiest reason to finally pull the trigger on a purchase, but it is a very practical one.
