If you fired up Netflix on March 20 hoping to see Arthur Shelby charge into battle one more time, we have some tough news for you. The eldest Shelby brother is gone, and the way he went out will haunt fans for a long time.
Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man does not waste time with the revelation. Tommy visits a gravestone early in the film, and the name on it confirms the worst: Arthur Shelby, dead in 1938 at just 43 years old.
Wait, Did Tommy Actually Kill His Own Brother?
Yes. And that is the gut-punch this film saves for its most shocking scene.
For most of the movie, it looks like Arthur died in a straightforward car accident. Sad, yes, but not unexpected for a man who lived as dangerously as he did. Then comes Tommy’s confession to Ada.
During a confrontation fuelled by booze and rage, Tommy admits he intentionally killed Arthur because he wanted to be “free of him.” It is one of the most devastating admissions in the entire Peaky Blinders saga, and it reframes everything we thought we knew about Tommy’s grief.
So Why Is Paul Anderson Not in the Movie?
This is where real life and fiction blur in a big way. Paul Anderson, who played Arthur Shelby across all six seasons, pleaded guilty in 2024 to possessing Class A crack cocaine, along with Class B amphetamines and two Class C prescription substances. He was fined over a thousand dollars as a result.
Rather than recast the role or use digital tricks to put Anderson back on screen, the filmmakers made the bold call to write Arthur out entirely. It was a decision that kept the story honest and avoided anything that might feel cheap or disrespectful.
And here is the thing: Paul Anderson himself is okay with it. In an interview with LADbible just two weeks before the film dropped, he said he thinks it is “great” and a “powerful” creative choice. He has no bitterness about how things played out.
What Is Paul Anderson Doing Now?
Anderson is not sitting still. His agent confirmed that he remains on good terms with creator Steve Knight and the wider Peaky Blinders family. He still has “love and respect” for the show.
He is also back on screen in a new project called The Gray House, currently available on Amazon Prime Video. So fans who miss seeing him act will not have to wait long.
Arthur’s Death Weighs Heavy on Tommy
The film is set in 1940, two years after Arthur died. Tommy is in self-imposed exile by this point, having already lost both his brother and his daughter Ruby before the movie’s events begin.
Arthur’s death is not a side note. It is a weight Tommy carries through every scene, shaping his choices and his state of mind throughout the entire story.
What Comes Next for Peaky Blinders?
Netflix is reportedly looking to turn Peaky Blinders into a full franchise. Plans include a prequel series focused on the late Helen McCrory’s character Polly Gray, as well as a brand new series set in Birmingham in 1953 that is already filming.
Whether Arthur Shelby returns in flashbacks or prequel form remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: his story ended in the most dramatic way possible, and the Peaky Blinders universe is only getting bigger from here.
