Marvel’s Wolverine just had its biggest moment yet, and it did not disappoint.
At PlayStation’s State of Play on June 2, 2026, Insomniac Games opened the show with an extended gameplay reveal for Marvel’s Wolverine — the most anticipated PS5 exclusive of the year. The footage ran around seven minutes and confirmed a lot of things fans have been waiting years to see.
Jean Grey Is in the Game
The biggest surprise from the reveal was Jean Grey. She shows up alongside Logan in a trenchcoat, and the two fight together against a group of cybernetically-enhanced mercenaries called the Reavers. It’s the first time a fellow X-Men mutant has been confirmed for the game.
Sabretooth was also confirmed. Logan’s arch-rival will appear in the game, and based on the footage, an epic showdown between the two seems guaranteed.
What the Gameplay Actually Looks Like
The mission shown at State of Play has Wolverine tracking a group of mutants who have been captured by the Reavers, a cyborg militia that hates mutants. He sneaks through a guarded base, pounces on enemies, rides a motorcycle through a forest to cut off a convoy, and carves through wave after wave of enemies.
The combat is fast, bloody, and brutal. This is not Spider-Man with claws. Insomniac has clearly gone for a much darker tone here.
The healing factor is built into gameplay too. Wolverine’s health slowly regenerates on its own, but when he takes serious damage, players have to mash the Square button to kick his healing into overdrive and get him back in the fight. It’s a neat way to make the regeneration feel active rather than passive.
Story Details: No X-Men, Just Team X
After the show, Insomniac’s creative director Marcus Smith shared new story details. In this game, the X-Men do not exist yet. Logan is part of a group called Team X, which goes around the world protecting mutants.
Wolverine can technically die if his heart stops in battle, but adrenaline and sheer rage can bring him back. That’s very on-brand for Logan.
Players who are not into the gore also have options. Insomniac confirmed an accessibility setting that lets you tone down the blood or turn it off completely.
Pre-Orders Are Open Now
Marvel’s Wolverine is priced at $69.99 in the US and launches on September 15, 2026, exclusively on PS5. Pre-orders are live now on the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Direct, and at major retailers.
One more thing worth noting: Sony has confirmed that its single-player first-party games will no longer come to PC. Wolverine is a PS5 exclusive, permanently.
Final Thoughts
After five years of teases and silence, Insomniac finally showed their hand. What’s on display looks confident, violent, and genuinely different from anything they’ve made before. September 15 cannot come fast enough.
