GTA 6 is going all-in on wildlife. Rockstar Games has confirmed that more than 170 animal species will be found across Leonida when the game launches, giving players plenty of creatures to discover outside the busy streets of Vice City.
So far, we’ve spotted everything from alligators, sharks, dolphins, and manatees to flamingos, monkeys, armadillos, raccoons, snakes, and several different dog breeds. But there’s a catch: Rockstar has only revealed a fraction of the full animal lineup.
That means there are still a lot of creatures hiding in Leonida that we haven’t seen yet.
How Many Animals Are in GTA 6?
Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 will feature more than 170 animal species.
That’s a huge increase in variety for a Grand Theft Auto game, and it makes sense given the game’s Florida-inspired setting. Leonida includes busy urban areas, rural locations, beaches, rivers, wetlands, swamps, and large stretches of ocean.
Rockstar vice president of dynamic art Michael Kane explained that the team wanted to represent Florida’s diverse ecosystem across these different environments. The developers have also researched the animals closely to make sure they look and move naturally.
Some animals will even fall into categories such as Rare, Discoverable, and Legendary, although Rockstar hasn’t revealed exactly how those categories work yet.

We’ve seen a little over 40 animals and animal groups so far through Rockstar’s trailers, screenshots, Extended Look footage, and information from game previews.

Aquatic Animals
GTA 6 isn’t just packed with wildlife on land. Rockstar is also filling Leonida’s rivers, wetlands, beaches, and surrounding waters with marine life.
The confirmed aquatic animals include:

Alligators are probably the least surprising addition given the game’s Florida inspiration, but the larger marine ecosystem is just as interesting.

Birds in GTA 6
Birds make up another big part of the wildlife we’ve seen so far.
The confirmed species and groups include:

- Woodpeckers
Flamingos are probably one of the most recognizable examples. They fit perfectly into GTA 6’s Florida-inspired world and have already appeared in Rockstar’s promotional material.
Of course, birds aren’t just there to fill space. Rockstar is putting considerable effort into their animations and behavior, which should make the game’s environments feel more dynamic when you’re simply driving or exploring.
Why Does GTA 6 Have So Many Animals?
A big reason is the setting. Leonida is Rockstar’s fictional take on Florida, so the developers have a massive range of environments to work with. Instead of creating one generic wildlife system, Rockstar can populate each area with creatures that make sense for that particular habitat.
You could see completely different wildlife depending on whether you’re exploring the city, heading through the countryside, visiting the wetlands, or traveling along the coast.
This is also an area where Rockstar can build on the work it did with the Red Dead Redemption games. Wildlife played a major role in making those worlds feel alive, and GTA 6 appears to be taking that idea even further.
Rockstar has also talked about improving the visual quality of animal fur, feathers, coats, scales, and other details, along with the animations that bring each creature to life.

GTA 6 Animals Won’t All Be Easy to Find
One of the more interesting details is Rockstar’s mention of Rare, Discoverable, and Legendary animals.
That suggests some creatures may be much harder to find than others.
Rockstar hasn’t explained whether these categories are connected to exploration, specific locations, special conditions, or something else entirely. So for now, it’s best not to read too much into them.
Still, the idea gives players another reason to explore Leonida rather than simply rushing from one mission to the next.
Are All GTA 6 Animals Confirmed?
No. Not even close. Rockstar has confirmed the overall figure of more than 170 species, but only a portion of those animals have been publicly identified.
That’s important because there are already plenty of GTA 6 animal lists online that mix confirmed creatures with speculation. Some of those lists are based on animals from previous Rockstar games, while others rely on old leaks or things fans believe they’ve spotted in screenshots.
We’re keeping those animals off this list unless there’s enough evidence to consider them confirmed.
So, for example, if an animal hasn’t been clearly shown or backed up by a reliable GTA 6 preview, we’re not going to add it just because it appeared in Red Dead Redemption 2 or an earlier GTA game.
How Many GTA 6 Animals Are Still Hidden?
Quite a few. With Rockstar confirming more than 170 species and only a small portion publicly identified, there are potentially well over 100 animals that we haven’t seen yet.
That’s one of the more exciting parts of the current GTA 6 wildlife list. Rockstar could reveal more creatures through future trailers and screenshots, but it could also leave many of them for players to discover after launch.
Considering how much attention the studio is putting into Leonida’s ecosystems, there should be plenty of surprises waiting outside Vice City.

When Does GTA 6 Release?
GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The game takes players back to Vice City and the wider state of Leonida, with Rockstar promising its biggest and most detailed world yet.
Rockstar has also opened pre-orders, with digital pre-loading scheduled to begin on November 12.
Final Thoughts
The animal lineup might seem like a small part of GTA 6 at first, but more than 170 species is a pretty remarkable number.
We’ve already seen alligators swimming through the waterways, flamingos gathering around wetlands, dolphins in the ocean, monkeys moving through the environment, and plenty of domestic animals around populated areas. And that’s only what Rockstar has shown us so far.
The bigger question is what the remaining species will be.
