Sony just dropped one of the biggest gaming surprises of 2026. God of War: Laufey is real, and it was revealed at the PlayStation State of Play on June 2.
Kratos is not the main character this time. His wife, Laufey — better known as Faye — takes the lead role. If that sounds like a bold move, it absolutely is.
Who Is Playing Faye?

Deborah Ann Woll, best known for her role in Daredevil, voices and portrays Faye in the game. That is a strong casting choice. Woll has the range to carry an emotionally heavy story, and this one looks like it will need that.
Ariel Lawrence is the Game Director on Laufey, with Cory Barlog stepping into a Head of Creative role to guide the long-term direction of the franchise.
What Is the Story About?
Faye died before the events of God of War 2018. That was always the backstory. This game picks up right after her funeral.
She wakes up in a place called the Everywhen — the afterlife of the gods, where fallen deities from every mythology gather. Faye quickly realizes the plans she had put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are now in danger. So she fights her way through it.
The world pulls from multiple mythologies at once. Norse, Greek, and others share this afterlife space. That is a fresh direction for the series.
New Characters Joining Faye

Two new companions were announced alongside Faye.
Jack Quaid voices Phranque, a cosmic cube with a big personality and a protective streak. Yes, a sentient cube. It sounds odd on paper, but the State of Play footage made Phranque an immediate fan favorite.
Perlina Lau plays Rue, an enchanted ribbon guardian trying to stop a powerful sword from ending up in the wrong hands.
20 Minutes of Gameplay Already Out
Sony did not just show a cinematic. They dropped a full 20-minute uninterrupted gameplay video at the reveal. The combat is familiar – brutal, up-close, and deeply satisfying. It looks like a full-scale AAA God of War title, not a side project.
God of War: Laufey is a PS5 exclusive. No release date has been confirmed yet, but wishlisting is open on the PlayStation Store.
Fans Are Split Right Down the Middle
Not everyone is happy. A lot of longtime fans wanted Kratos back. The reaction on PlayStation’s official social media accounts has been intense, with supporters and critics going at each other hard.
Some are calling the shift to Faye refreshing. Others feel the franchise is drifting too far from what made it great. That divide is real, and Sony knows it.
For what it’s worth, the gameplay itself is receiving much more positive reactions than the premise. People who watched the full 20-minute video came away more impressed than those who only saw the announcement trailer.
Should You Be Excited?
If you loved God of War 2018 and Ragnarok for their storytelling, combat, and world-building, this looks like more of that. The setting is new. The lead character is new. But the DNA is the same.
God of War: Laufey is the next mainline entry in the series, not a spin-off. Santa Monica Studio is treating it with the same level of ambition as the Kratos games.
