Armored Mewtwo is stomping back into Pokémon GO. The Pokémon Company confirmed the news at the closing ceremony of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco. It’s the first time this Pokémon has shown up in the game in six years.

When Does Armored Mewtwo Return?
Armored Mewtwo will appear in five-star raids during the Pokémon GO Fest 2026: Mega Finale, running from September 5 to September 6. The raids run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time on both days.
That means the window is short. You’ll want to plan your raid hopping around that Saturday-to-Sunday stretch, not stretch it out over a full week.
What Makes Armored Mewtwo Different From Regular Mewtwo
Armored Mewtwo is based on the version of Mewtwo seen in the 2019 movie Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution. In that film, Mewtwo’s power gets suppressed by a suit of armor built to control it.
Despite the armor holding it back, this form still hits harder than most other Pokémon in the game. Stat-wise, it trades a bit of Mewtwo’s usual Attack for extra Defense and Stamina, so it survives longer in a raid than the base form does.
One bummer for shiny hunters: Shiny Armored Mewtwo will not be available during this event. If you’re chasing that lime-green tail, you’ll have to wait for a future run.

Armored Mewtwo Weaknesses and Best Counters
Armored Mewtwo is still a pure Psychic type underneath that armor. It’s weak to Bug, Ghost, and Dark-type attacks.
Based on current raid data, the strongest picks to bring into battle are:
- Necrozma – Dawn Wings
- Mega Tyranitar
- Mega Gengar
- Mega Mewtwo Y
- Mega Mewtwo X
- Shadow Hydreigon
These are the top-performing counters based on simulated raid results. If you don’t own any of those, any strong Dark, Ghost, or Bug attacker with a high-DPS moveset will still get the job done, just a bit slower.
On defense, Armored Mewtwo’s best moves are Confusion and Psystrike. Neither move type gives it an edge against its Bug, Dark, or Ghost weaknesses, so don’t worry too much about which charged move it locks in during your raid.
How Many Trainers Do You Need?
You’ll want at least three trainers to take Armored Mewtwo down in a five-star raid. That said, more is always safer, especially if your group doesn’t have top-tier counters. Five to seven trainers with solid counters should make it a clean, fast win.
Catch CP Range
A raid-caught Armored Mewtwo lands between 1,740 and 1,821 CP normally, or between 2,175 and 2,276 CP if the raid happens during boosted weather. If your catch falls in that higher weather-boosted range, that’s your signal you snagged a perfect (100%) IV Mewtwo. Stock up on Golden Razz Berries and don’t waste balls on a bad throw.

Armored Mewtwo Is Part of a Bigger Mega Weekend
Armored Mewtwo isn’t the only headliner that weekend. The Pokémon GO Fest 2026: Mega Finale brings rotating habitats, powerful Mega Raids, and Super Mega Raids featuring Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y.
Mega Mewtwo X shows up on Saturday, September 5, and Mega Mewtwo Y takes over on Sunday, September 6. Beat them in a Super Mega Raid and you’ll collect a Mewtwo with a special background tied to the event.
The lead-up period, called Mega Ascension, runs from August 31 through September 4 and features its own rotating lineup, including Mega Victreebel, Mega Dragonite, Mega Malamar, Mega Falinks, Mega Skarmory, Mega Starmie, and both Mega Raichu forms. During that stretch, you can also pick Chespin, Fennekin, or Froakie through branching Timed Research, which sets you up to Mega Evolve one of them into Mega Chesnaught, Mega Delphox, or Mega Greninja once the main weekend hits.
On top of all that, remote raid passes will have no limit from Saturday through Sunday, so squads that can’t meet up in person still have a real shot at the raids.
Should You Prioritize Armored Mewtwo?
If you already have a maxed-out Mewtwo or one of its Mega forms, Armored Mewtwo is more of a collection piece than a competitive upgrade. It’s currently ranked as a weaker raid attacker than standard Mewtwo, since its moveset doesn’t hit as hard.
That said, it’s rare, it’s only around for two days, and it won’t be back for who knows how long. If you missed it in 2020, this is the raid to prioritize during the Mega Finale weekend.
