Nintendo has officially announced the lead actors for its highly anticipated live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, and fans finally have a first look at who will be stepping into the iconic roles of Princess Zelda and Link.
Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth Take on Legendary Roles
In a social media post on Wednesday, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed that Bo Bragason will portray Princess Zelda, while Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will take on the role of Link. The announcement came alongside two images that appear to be first-look photos of the actors in costume.
“I am pleased to announce that for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda, Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason-san, and Link by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san,” Miyamoto wrote in the statement shared on Nintendo’s official X (formerly Twitter). “I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen.”
A Look at the Cast
Rising English actress Bo Bragason is well-known for playing Roxy in Disney+’s Renegade Nell and for her part in the 2024 vampire comedy The Radleys. She also starred in Three Girls, a 2017 BBC drama that received accolades for its sober portrayal of actual events.
Another Englishman, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, has already established himself in a number of roles. He portrayed Miles in Netflix’s The Haunting of Bly Manor and provided the voice of the title character in Disney’s 2022 live-action Pinocchio. He most recently shared the screen alongside Bryan Cranston and Allison Janney in the 2025 movie Everything’s Going to be Great and the Canadian comedy Son of a Critch.
Directed by Wes Ball, Produced by Miyamoto and Avi Arad
Wes Ball, who is most renowned for his work on the Maze Runner trilogy and this year’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is directing the live-action Legend of Zelda movie. Avi Arad, a veteran producer, and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo are co-producing the movie.
The movie was originally scheduled for release in March 2027, but Miyamoto said that “production reasons” caused the premiere to be moved to May 7, 2027. The announcement has excited the gaming community, despite the fact that not much else has been disclosed regarding the plot or supporting actors.
Hopes High After Success of Super Mario Bros. Movie
Following the huge success of the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, Nintendo is now pursuing live-action. Co-produced with Illumination and released by Universal Pictures, that production set a standard for video game adaptations and broke multiple box office records.
Nintendo and Sony are handling The Legend of Zelda this time around, and it is anticipated that the movie will offer a more character-driven, cinematic interpretation of the cherished series. Fans of the Zelda series are worried—and cautiously hopeful—about how the game will adapt to live action because of its deep backstory and emotional depth.
Fans should anticipate more updates as the project progresses, as the cast has now been announced and production is well underway. For those who haven’t heard of the series, The Legend of Zelda has been a mainstay of Nintendo’s gaming lineup since 1986 and is renowned for its expansive fantasy setting, endearing characters, and classic gameplay. The official Nintendo website has more information about the series.
The countdown to May 2027 has officially begun.
