If you thought you knew RuneScape, think again. Jagex has just pulled back the curtain on RuneScape: Dragonwilds, and it’s unlike anything they’ve done before. Instead of another MMO update or spin-off, they’re diving headfirst into the world of survival games — and it’s set in a dangerous, untamed part of Gielinor that players have never seen.
Set in a brand-new region called Ashenfall, Dragonwilds throws you into a brutal world where survival isn’t just about staying fed and warm — it’s about mastering wild magic, crafting everything from scratch, and staying alive long enough to take down the terrifying Dragon Queen who rules the land.
This isn’t your typical fantasy survival title, though. Jagex is giving it that signature RuneScape flavor, and longtime fans will definitely feel it.
Survival Meets Magic
At first glance, Dragonwilds might seem like your standard survival formula — collect resources, build a shelter, craft some weapons, and hope you make it through the night. But here’s where it gets interesting: everything in this world is infused with something called Anima, a mysterious magical energy that lets you do things you just won’t find in your average survival game.
Instead of hacking trees the old-fashioned way, you might summon ghostly axes to chop them down for you. Broken armor? Channel Anima to patch it up with a flick of your wrist. It’s RuneScape-style survival, and it looks like it’s going to feel completely different from anything else in the genre.
Go Solo or Team Up
Whether you prefer flying solo or rolling with a squad, Dragonwilds has you covered. You can take on Ashenfall alone, or join forces with up to three friends for co-op play. That flexibility is great — especially when you’re staring down a cave full of wild beasts or trying to build a solid base before nightfall.
The Dragon Queen isn’t going to go down easily, and it sounds like you’ll need all the help you can get when it comes to taking her on.
Built With Players in Mind
One of the coolest things about this project is how involved the community already is. Jagex has been running closed alpha tests, bringing in early players to get their feedback and help shape the game as it develops. That approach will continue through Early Access, which is scheduled to launch on Steam in Spring 2025.
So yeah — this isn’t just a game being built behind closed doors. Players are part of the process from day one.
