Let’s be honest, when Rockstar drops a new Grand Theft Auto, the whole gaming world stops. Whether you’ve been stealing cars since the PS2 days or just hopped into GTA Online with friends recently, you already know GTA VI is going to be massive. But alongside all the excitement, there’s something else making waves — and no, it’s not just the setting or characters.
It’s the price tag.
Yeah. The rumored cost of GTA VI is starting to raise eyebrows. And wallets.
A Shift in Game Pricing Is Already Happening
Over the past couple of years, video games have slowly started to creep up in price. First, the jump from $60 to $70 became the norm for next-gen titles. Some people were cool with it — inflation, bigger production budgets, more polished experiences. Fair enough. But others have been side-eyeing the industry, especially when physical game discs are becoming less common and digital distribution is cheaper for publishers.
Now here’s the kicker- Mario Kart World, the next major Nintendo title for the upcoming Switch 2, just made headlines for being priced at $80 digitally. Not a collector’s edition. Not a bundle. Just the base game.
So naturally, the question that’s on every gamer’s mind is this- If Mario Kart can go for $80, how much is Rockstar going to charge for GTA VI?

Rumors Point to a $100+ Base Game
While Rockstar hasn’t officially released pricing details, chatter around the industry suggests the base version of GTA VI could launch at over $100. That’s right — just the standard edition, no fancy collectibles or steel cases. Just your download or disc and the game.
Now, it’s important to remember- this is still speculation. But it’s not coming out of nowhere. With how long this game has been in development, and the fact that it’s already shaping up to be one of the biggest launches in history, it makes sense that Rockstar might test the waters with a premium price.
And let’s face it, they know the game will sell no matter what. Fans have waited over a decade. People are already clearing their schedules and saving up. If any game could get away with a $100+ price tag, it’s this one.
The Collector’s Edition Might Cost as Much as a Console
Now, if you think $100 is wild, buckle up.
According to Anurag Reddy from Analytics Insight, the Collector’s Edition of GTA VI might land somewhere between $250 and $300. That’s more than what a brand-new Xbox Series S costs. It sounds outrageous, but here’s the thing: this isn’t exactly new territory in the gaming world.
Big releases often come with pricey Collector’s Editions packed with all sorts of extras. Think back to Cyberpunk 2077, which came with a full statue, artbook, stickers, patches, and other collectibles. That one also hovered around $250.
So the idea of Rockstar doing the same doesn’t sound too far-fetched. The real question is — what do you actually get for that kind of money?
Because let’s be honest, if the “exclusive content” is just a duffel bag, a keychain, and a digital bonus mission, fans are going to feel pretty ripped off. For $300, there needs to be something really special — maybe a full map replica, a custom controller, or some kind of unique in-game perk. Otherwise, the backlash is going to be loud.
No Release Date Yet, But the Hype Is Real
So far, Rockstar hasn’t locked in a firm release date. What we do know is that GTA VI is expected to launch later this year on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. No mention of PC yet, which is pretty typical — Rockstar usually brings their games to consoles first and ports to PC later on.
And even though there’s no pricing confirmation, it’s hard not to notice where the trend is heading. Between rising costs, higher expectations, and a market that’s clearly willing to spend, games crossing the $100 threshold might become a lot more common than we’d like to admit.

Is It Worth It? That’s Up to You
At the end of the day, nobody has to buy the game on day one. But for die-hard fans, it’s probably not even a question. If Rockstar delivers the kind of experience people are hoping for — a massive world, gripping story, next-level graphics, and tons of replay value — then even a higher price tag might feel worth it.
But here’s the truth: people are going to pay. Whether it’s $100, $300, or somewhere in between, GTA VI is going to move millions of copies. It’s just a matter of how much value players feel they’re getting in return.
So, if you were planning to buy GTA VI the moment it drops, maybe start tossing some spare change in a jar now. Because this isn’t going to be a cheap ride.
