New battle royale rumors leave players divided once again
The Battlefield franchise has always promised epic-scale multiplayer battles. The series has been struggling in recent years, however. Battlefield 2042, the most recent entry released in 2021, left many players disappointed. Omitting a single-player campaign, maps feeling sparse and lifeless, and missing core features such as leaderboards and matchmaking systems meant the game was well and truly dead on arrival.
DICE attempted to improve the experience with numerous updates, but it was too little, too late. All attention has turned to the next installment—unofficially called Battlefield 6—and the anticipation is palpable.
A Free Battle Royale in the Works?
One of the more surprising rumors surrounding the next Battlefield game is the inclusion of a free-to-play battle royale mode. Insider Gaming reported leaked details about the mode, which briefly appeared online before being taken down due to copyright claims.
The idea has sparked a lot of discussion. Some fans are excited at the prospect, believing Battlefield’s large maps and destructible environments could make for a unique twist on the genre. Others are far less convinced, especially considering the failure of Firestorm, the battle royale mode included with Battlefield V that quickly faded into obscurity.
Fans Remain Divided
The community reaction has been mixed. “Battlefield has the best base gameplay for a battle royale,” one player noted. Another commented, “Do a few matches, then never touch it again—that’s how most BRs go.”
Some players are tired of the genre altogether and want the series to focus on what made it great in the first place: large-scale, team-based warfare.
What’s Next for Battlefield?
With no official release date yet, Battlefield 6 still has time to shape its identity. Whether the new battle royale mode succeeds or not, fans just want a game that brings the series back to its roots—and keeps them coming back for more.
