Got a PlayStation account you’ve been using since 2019? You may have some free PSN money coming your way.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has agreed to pay $7.8 million to settle a class action lawsuit over the way digital games were sold through the PlayStation Store. If you bought certain digital PlayStation games between April 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023, you could qualify for a credit on your PSN account.
The good news is that you don’t have to fill out a claim form. If you’re eligible, Sony is expected to contact you by email.
Here’s what you need to know about the settlement, including who qualifies, which games are covered, and when you could receive your credit.
What Is the PlayStation Settlement About?
The lawsuit, Caccuri, et al. v. Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC, was filed in May 2021 by lead plaintiff Agustin Caccuri.
At the heart of the case is the way Sony handled digital game sales on the PlayStation Network.
Before April 2019, retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Target, and Walmart could sell vouchers that customers could redeem for specific PlayStation games. Sony later stopped allowing those third-party retailers to sell game-specific digital download codes.
The lawsuit argued that removing those retailers from the digital game market gave Sony greater control over pricing and reduced competition.
Sony has denied the allegations and hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing as part of the settlement.
This isn’t the first settlement proposal in the case, either. Two previous attempts were rejected before the current $7.8 million agreement received preliminary approval.
Who Is Eligible for the PSN Credit?
You may be part of the settlement class if you meet these requirements:
- You have a US PlayStation Network account.
- You purchased at least one qualifying digital game. Here is the list of games.
- The purchase was made between April 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023.
Court documents estimate that around 4.4 million to 4.5 million US PSN accounts could be included.
That sounds like a lot of players, and it is. Because millions of accounts could be sharing the settlement fund, individual credits are expected to be relatively modest after legal fees and other expenses are taken into account.
If you no longer have an active PSN account, you may still be able to contact the settlement administrator to find out whether you’re eligible.
Which PlayStation Games Are Included?
The settlement covers more than 100 PlayStation titles. Many of them were previously available through digital vouchers before Sony changed its distribution policy in 2019.
Some of the recognizable games on the list include:
- The Last of Us
- Destiny
- Destiny: The Collection
- Resident Evil 4
- The Elder Scrolls Online
- God of War Collection
- Uncharted Collection
- Ratchet & Clank Collection

That’s only a small selection, though. If you’ve bought several PlayStation games during the eligible period, it’s worth checking the settlement administrator’s complete list rather than assuming your purchases don’t qualify.
How Will Sony Pay Eligible Players?
This is probably the part most PlayStation owners will want to know about.
You don’t need to submit a claim form.
Eligible players are expected to receive their benefit automatically. Sony will notify qualifying customers through the email address associated with their PlayStation account.
The settlement payment won’t arrive as physical cash or a check. Instead, the benefit will come as a cash-value credit for your PSN account, essentially giving you funds to spend through PlayStation.
The exact amount each eligible account will receive hasn’t been announced yet. That figure will depend on the final settlement distribution and other deductions from the $7.8 million fund.
When Will the Settlement Be Finalized?
The settlement received preliminary approval from the Northern District of California on April 8, 2026. Saveri Law Firm subsequently announced the agreement on April 29.
The next major date is October 15, 2026.
That’s when the court is scheduled to hold the fairness hearing. The judge will review the settlement and determine whether it should receive final approval.
The deadline to opt out of the settlement or file an objection was July 2, 2026.
If you’re already part of the settlement class and didn’t opt out, you’ll remain included. Assuming the court gives the agreement final approval in October, eligible credits should begin being distributed afterward.
Why Does This Settlement Matter?
For most PlayStation players, the biggest takeaway is simple: there could be some free PSN credit coming your way.
But the lawsuit also highlights a much bigger issue surrounding digital game stores.
Sony isn’t the only major company to face questions about how much control a digital marketplace should have over pricing and distribution. Apple, Google, Microsoft, Valve, and other major platform operators have faced similar scrutiny over their digital storefronts and payment systems.
Digital games have become the standard for millions of players, so decisions about who can sell those games and how they’re priced can have a direct impact on consumers.
For now, though, there’s not much you need to do.
If you had a US PSN account and bought qualifying games during the settlement period, keep an eye on the email address connected to your account. You can also check your PlayStation purchase history if you want to see what you bought during the eligible years.
And one important warning: don’t pay anyone who claims they can get your settlement money faster. The process is supposed to be automatic, so there’s no reason to give your PSN login details, payment information, or other personal information to a third party.
