Subnautica 2 launches in early access on May 14, 2026, priced at $29.99 across Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox Game Preview. The game introduces co-op for up to four players, new biomes, crafting systems, and expanded exploration, with more content planned throughout its two to three year early access period.
After years of legal drama, delays, and behind-the-scenes chaos, Subnautica 2 is finally coming. Developer Unknown Worlds announced that the game will launch into early access on May 14, 2026, just two weeks away.
A new cinematic trailer dropped alongside the announcement, confirming the date and setting the tone for what’s shaping up to be one of the biggest early access launches of the year.
What Will the Game Cost?
Subnautica 2 will be priced at $29.99 at launch. Unknown Worlds confirmed the price will go up once the full 1.0 version releases, so early access is the cheapest way in.
Where Can You Play It?
The game will be available on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Xbox Game Preview on Xbox Series X/S. PC players on Xbox can also access it there. Better yet, it launches day one on Xbox Game Pass through Game Preview, both on console and PC.

What’s in the Game at Launch?
Players can expect several biomes to explore, base building, crafting tools, and the Tadpole submersible to get around underwater. Four pre-designed characters will be available from day one, with more coming through updates.
One of the bigger additions over the original Subnautica is 4-player co-op. The game supports up to three friends joining your underwater run from the very start. Solo players can still go it alone if they prefer.
There will be some story elements at launch too, but don’t expect the full narrative. The Subnautica series typically hides its story inside exploration, and with only a portion of the planned world available at first, the complete story will come in updates over time.
Unknown Worlds has said the early access period will likely run two to three years before the 1.0 release, consistent with how both previous games in the series handled their development timelines.
The Drama Behind the Game
Getting here wasn’t easy. Subnautica 2 missed its original 2025 release window and became the center of a very public conflict between Unknown Worlds and its publisher, Krafton.
Krafton tried to remove key people at the studio. A judge stepped in and shut that down. At one point, Krafton’s CEO reportedly used ChatGPT to research legal strategy, which the judge did not take kindly to. Unknown Worlds’ leadership was reinstated and given a fair shot at hitting its performance targets.
Even the release date announcement was messy. Unknown Worlds’ chief said he found out about the May 14 date the same way everyone else did, and he was not happy about it. Krafton has since said it supports the launch, even after its name was quietly removed from the Steam page.
Despite all of this, Subnautica 2 is currently the most wishlisted game on Steam. Players have been watching closely, and the combination of a confirmed date plus a cinematic trailer has clearly reignited excitement.
What Comes Next?
The game is in active development, and Unknown Worlds plans to keep expanding it throughout the early access window. New biomes, creatures, craftables, and story content are all on the roadmap.
It’s a long road to 1.0, but fans of the original Subnautica have been here before. The first game spent a similar amount of time in early access and came out well-regarded. The sequel has a lot to live up to, and a lot riding on it.
May 14 is not far off.
