State of Decay 3 Is Finally Back - And You Can Play It in May

If you thought State of Decay 3 was quietly dying somewhere in a Microsoft basement, think again. Developer Undead Labs came out of nowhere on April 3, 2026, to announce that an alpha playtest for the long-awaited zombie survival game is right around the corner. And the best part? You can sign up right now.

This is the first real news the studio has shared in close to two years. Fans had been left in the dark since 2024, when a new in-engine trailer briefly reminded everyone the game existed. Now, things are finally moving.

What the Alpha Will Include

Franchise co-creator Brant Fitzgerald broke the news in a new video, giving fans a taste of what to expect when the alpha launches in May 2026.

“I’m not going to spoil the surprise for you, but I can say that it will feature 4-player co-op, some new base building and resource strategies, and a whole lot of combat,” Fitzgerald said.

So yes, you will be able to team up with three other people, build and manage your base, and fight through hordes of zombies. It sounds like a proper slice of what the full game will offer.

Slots for the alpha are limited, but Fitzgerald assured fans there will be “plenty of other opportunities” throughout 2026 for those who miss out this time. To register, you need to sign up with your Discord account and email address.

More Updates Are Coming

Undead Labs also promised this is just the beginning. In the months ahead, the team says they will regularly share development updates, covering what is new, what they are learning, and when more alpha slots will open up.

That is a big shift for a studio that had gone almost completely quiet since 2024. It looks like State of Decay 3 is entering a new phase, one where the developers are more actively talking to their community.

A Long Road to Get Here

State of Decay 3 was first announced all the way back in 2020 at the Xbox Games Showcase. That is nearly six years ago. Since then, updates have been few and far between.

The game ran into several roadblocks during development. These included allegations of workplace toxicity within Undead Labs, an unknown number of layoffs last year, and general radio silence from the studio. Through all of it, the game never got a release date.

The most recent sign of life before today came from Xbox Game Studios head Craig Duncan, who earlier this year said he had visited Undead Labs multiple times and actually played the game alongside the team. “It’s coming on really well,” he said, adding that the franchise’s potential still excites them.

Part of a Bigger Xbox Comeback

This announcement is not happening in isolation. Xbox is going through a significant moment right now. Phil Spencer has stepped down, and Asha Sharma has taken over as Microsoft Gaming CEO. She has made a “return to Xbox” her top priority, and 2026 is shaping up to be a huge year for the brand.

Other major Xbox titles expected this year include Kiln, Forza Horizon 6, and Fable. The Xbox Games Showcase is also set for June, followed by a dedicated deep dive into Gears of War: E-Day.

State of Decay 3 will launch on Xbox Series X/S and PC. Like other Xbox first-party games, it will be available on Game Pass from day one and is expected to support Xbox Cloud Gaming as well. A PS5 version has not been confirmed, though some reports suggest it is being considered.

As for a release date, nothing official has been announced. Industry analysts are now pointing to a likely 2027 launch, but that is still speculation.
