Hideo Kojima, the legendary creator behind the Metal Gear series and Death Stranding, has finally shared more about his upcoming PlayStation-exclusive project Physint. The reveal came during Kojima Productions’ 10th Anniversary event in Japan, where Kojima gave fans an update on the mysterious title.
Early Days of Development
Kojima was upfront that development on Physint is only just beginning. For now, he is personally focused on the conceptual stage, designing characters, thinking about casting, and mapping out the game’s foundation. “It is just the start,” he told the audience, making it clear that fans shouldn’t expect gameplay footage or concrete details for quite some time.
The event also featured a supportive message from Herman Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, who praised Kojima’s vision and called Physint the next evolution of tactical espionage action. Given Kojima’s history with Metal Gear Solid, that phrase immediately sparked excitement among fans hoping for a spiritual successor to the series.
Pushing Beyond Death Stranding and OD
Kojima confirmed that the technology powering Physint will be more advanced than both Death Stranding and his other in-progress title, the Xbox-exclusive OD. He explained that since Physint is planned for release further down the road, the team can use more cutting-edge tools and resources.
That timeline, however, means patience will be required. Back in May, Kojima suggested the game was still “five or six years away,” putting its earliest possible launch around 2030. By then, it’s very possible that the PlayStation 6 will be on store shelves, and Physint could end up being one of its showcase titles.
For now, Kojima Productions remains focused on OD, which doesn’t yet have a release date itself. Once OD ships, Physint will move further into active development.
Confirmed Cast Members
Although we don’t yet know who will play the main character – the SAG-AFTRA strikes delayed casting decisions – Kojima did reveal three actors who are officially attached to the project. Each shared their excitement in video messages shown during the event:
- Charlee Fraser, known for her role in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
- Don Lee (Ma Dong-Seok), recognized for his work in Marvel’s Eternals and the zombie hit Train to Busan.
- Minami Hamabe, the Japanese actress who starred in Godzilla Minus One.
Kojima ended his segment with a teaser: a highly realistic CG shot of Hamabe’s in-game likeness, giving fans a glimpse of just how visually ambitious Physint is aiming to be.
A Game That Plays Like a Movie

One of Kojima’s most intriguing comments came earlier this year, when he described Physint as a hybrid experience. “Of course it will be a game,” he said. “However, if your mother walks in on you playing, she’ll think you’re watching a movie.”
This reflects Kojima’s long-running fascination with cinema and storytelling. He has often said he wanted to direct films, and while those plans are currently on hold, Physint seems to be the closest blend yet of his game design and filmmaking ambitions.
The game is expected to use an advanced version of Guerrilla Game’s Decima Engine, which previously powered Death Stranding and Horizon Zero Dawn. This choice makes sense, as the Decima Engine has proven capable of delivering photorealistic visuals and large, detailed worlds.
The Bigger Celebration
The 10th Anniversary event was more than just about Physint. Fans were also treated to three minutes of new OD footage, the announcement of a Death Stranding anime adaptation, and even the reveal of official Kojima Productions sake. Still, the highlight for many was seeing Kojima confirm that he is returning to his tactical espionage roots.
Looking Ahead
Even though Physint is still years away, there is no denying the hype surrounding it. Expectations are already very high because Kojima promised a cutting-edge fusion of stealth gameplay and cinematic presentation. Fans will have to wait for Kojima and his team to gradually bring Physint to life for the time being, and maybe enjoy OD when it finally launches.
If Death Stranding showed us Kojima’s ability to reinvent open-world exploration, Physint may very well redefine what a stealth-action game can look and feel like in the next generation of consoles.
